The Beginning
My passion for Sound and Music emerged early in my life. As a high school student I was both playing drums and setting up the PA system. This double duty continued when I later joined the army band of the Cyprus National Guard, and as a professional drummer in live-music venues.
Broadcast Sound
In 1977, after successfully passed the relevant examinations, I was employed by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CYBC) as a full-time Sound Operator. The in-house training was based on BBC practices and standards, with which CYBC had close cooperation. For the first time, I had the opportunity to experiment with high-end valve microphones like the Neumann U67, in studios with “proper” acoustics. Among my duties was the recording of band performances and radio plays, the operation of NAGRA location recorders and TV booms, and mixing TV shows in studios and OB Vans.
Super Radio!
In 1990 I left the security of a permanent government job in CYBC and joined a team of selected experts with the task of designing, setting up and operating Radio Super, the first professionally licensed private radio station in Cyprus. I believe it was the most technologically advanced station in the region in those days. For example, we used hard disk recording and touch screens instead of the ubiquitous NAB Carts. Concurrently with my duties as Head of Sound at the station I was designing, tuning and sometimes operating Sound Reinforcement Systems.
Super TV!
In 1992 I was offered the position of Audio Manager at Lumiere TV (LTV), Cyprus’ first pay-TV station. Besides my administrative, managing and training duties, I was involved in the design of various Audio Systems including Sound Control Rooms for the station’s studios and OB Vans. I have also designed the Audio, Acoustics and Décor of two “Protoolean Suites”.
Open to New Opportunities
Currently I am an independent Audio Consultant and I am also preparing a structured Sound Technology learning course. I’ve always had a desire to convey my knowledge and experience to people prepared to exercise listening - not just hearing! At the same time I endeavor to develop my own Audio Plugins.
Formal Education
Apart from courses from City & Guilds of London, I studied at the Institute of Audio Research in New York. In those days very few schools offered dedicated Sound Engineering courses. Co-founder and one of my tutors was the late Albert Grundy who has also served as the president of Audio Engineering Society in 1983-1984. The class “Studio Technology and Practice” was taught by another well-known audio personality, the mastering engineer Bob Katz. I have also attended various short courses related to Management. Lately, as a long-life learner, I've completed two Music Technology courses at Coursera.com, just to keep my brain engines running! I have also been a regular visitor at the annual AES Conventions, attending the various technical presentations and workshops.
Accumulated Experience
Audio Systems Design, Location Sound, Live Sound, OBV Sound, Sound Studio, Audio Post Production, Sound Technology Instructor, Administrative and Managerial skills.
